Colleton district awarded two state grants including $62,100 strategic compensation grant for an elementary school

Superintendent Jessica Williams told the board the district received two state grants aimed at improving student outcomes and educator compensation.
The first award is a strategic compensation grant for $62,100, to be applied at one elementary school (the state selected one school per district in its approvals). The superintendent said the grant is intended to support an innovative educator compensation approach tied to student growth (fall 2024 and spring 2025 measures) for kindergarten through fifth grade at the awarded school.
Williams said the district had applied for the strategic compensation grant on behalf of multiple elementary schools, but the state selected one school from among applicants within the district. The district plans to consider how to scale similar approaches across more schools in the future.
The second award targets tutoring at Colleton County Middle School and is aimed at schools designated as Palmetto math schools where a specified share of students are in the "do not meet" category. The superintendent said the state will fully fund that tutoring program, providing after-school support intended to improve student outcomes.
School staff involved in grant writing were recognized during the meeting for obtaining the awards.
Ending District leaders said they will work to deploy the grant funds at the identified schools and to explore long-term structures to expand strategic compensation and targeted tutoring beyond the initial awards.
