County considers charging surrender fee for unclaimed dogs as intake rises

County officials said animal-control intake has increased and discussed establishing a fee for owners who surrender dogs to the county.
Officials reported the county has seen a recurring problem with people bringing dogs to county facilities and asked the court to consider a $100 surrender fee to cover the costs the county incurs in holding and, when necessary, euthanizing animals. "I'd like to go charge him a hundred dollars. If you want us to surrender, that's about what it cost us to get the dog up there and get it euthanized or whatever we have to do," an official said.
Commissioners and the sheriff noted that some surrenders occur because owners have died or cannot care for animals; the court agreed it should consider a policy but asked the county attorney (Mike) to draft an ordinance or a fee schedule for review.
The court did not adopt a fee at the meeting but directed staff to discuss options and return with a formal proposal for the commissioners to consider.
