District recommends math textbook choices; board will vote next meeting

Janice Headen and district curriculum staff presented the Colleton County School District’s math textbook selection process and timeline at the Committee of the Whole meeting on March 11.
Headen explained that per board policy (IJJ) the superintendent recommends textbooks to the board after school- and district-level committees collect evidence and rank first and second choices. The district committee met and forwarded recommendations to Superintendent Williams, who will present formal adoption items to the board for a vote at the next regular meeting.
Staff said samples were placed on display in the boardroom for public review and that paper surveys were available. Headen described the rubric and survey used by teacher teams, aligned with state department guidance; the rubric evaluated alignment with state standards, inclusion of process standards and modeling, interventions and supports for multilingual and tiered learners, assessment and feedback opportunities, consumables, and digital resources.
K–5 publishers presented included Eureka Math, Reveal, Envision/Experience, I-Ready Classroom, and Kiddom Math. For grades 6–8, staff presented Math Nation, Reveal Math, I-Ready Math and Envision. High-school teams vetted multiple publishers for Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and precalculus; staff also noted several AP and advanced-course textbooks are on a “wish list” for future consideration and are not planned for immediate adoption.
Headen and the math team said that the district’s first-choice materials for Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II include consumable student workbooks for at least those courses. Staff asked board members to review the packet and the display samples and to vote on the recommendations at next week’s meeting.
