Spartanburg 1 to consider new K–12 math core program at April meeting

District curriculum staff told trustees they will ask the board to approve a new K–12 math core program at the April meeting following a teacher review and state textbook caravan.
"The state narrowed down several high quality instruction materials," Ms. Jody Wright said, describing a February 27 textbook caravan organized by the South Carolina Department of Education and an advisory team of teachers who reviewed materials. Wright said K–8 teachers recommended McGraw Hill; selections for Geometry, Algebra I and II, precalculus and AP Calculus are listed in the board packet for trustees to review.
Wright asked trustees to review the links in the board packet over the next month and be ready to vote on the teachers' recommendation at the board’s April meeting. She noted Regulation 43-170 requires local board approval for textbook adoptions.
Why it matters: Adoption of a state-recommended core math program affects classroom instruction, teacher materials and multi-year curriculum alignment. The board will have one month to review materials before the formal vote.
Next steps: Trustees were asked to examine materials in their packet and prepare to vote at the April meeting.
