Superintendent: district has federal funds for 2024–25 but future federal support is uncertain

Jennifer Green, superintendent of Southfield Public School District, told the board on March 11 that the district "has received its federal funds for this academic school year, meaning that we will be able to carry out our programming through June thirtieth of 2025." She added, however, that she could not guarantee the same level of federal support for the 2025–26 academic year.
Why it matters: Federal education funds support ongoing district programs. A change in federal disbursements could affect curriculum, staffing and student services.
Green said she had received notice that the federal Department of Education might reduce releases at the federal level and promised weekly legislative updates. "I will continue to update you every Friday with legislative updates from our county officials and we will continue to advocate for what's best for scholars," she told trustees.
Board members noted local and state advocates are active: Green said former U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence and local leaders had attended recent events backing continued federal support. Board President Ashanti Bland encouraged families and community members to contact representatives in support of public education.
Ending: The board said representatives or members of their teams will attend the district's State of the District address the next evening and that the superintendent will keep trustees and the community informed about changes to federal funding and related program impacts.
