St. Lucie County commissioners approved a resolution establishing special assessments under the Culvert Assistance Program (an MSBU) to fund the replacement of failed stormwater culverts for benefiting properties.
Barbara Gettler, the MSBU coordinator, told the board the program gives property owners the option to fund culvert replacements through non‑ad valorem assessments. "The purpose of this resolution relates to the imposition and collection of special assessments to fund stormwater culvert improvements within the MSBU," Gettler said while asking the board to adopt Resolution No. 2025‑557 (assessment resolution number given in staff materials).
The nut graf: commissioners expressed support for continuing and, if necessary, expanding the program because it helps preserve infrastructure and can reduce downstream repair costs; public works staff and at least one commissioner said additional funding should be considered to meet demand.
The board held a public hearing, received no public comment, and voted to adopt the resolution. Staff said the program is largely funded from MSBU accounts and that the office can provide additional detail about account balances and future funding needs when requested.
