Special Olympics draws 51 participants; district reports progress in LDOE Special Education playbook pilot

Blaise Pellegrino, supervisor of special education, reported to the Education Technology and Policy Committee that the district’s Special Olympics event on the thirteenth drew about 51 student participants and that the district is one of 11 selected for an LDOE Special Education Playbook pilot.
Pellegrino said students participated in a 25‑meter run (walk or assisted) and a softball/tennis throw; he thanked central office staff and adaptive PE teacher Catherine Miller for organizing the event. He described the event as the district’s first year for that format and said the department plans to expand participation next year.
On the playbook pilot, Pellegrino said the district has received state training and national consultant support on best practices. He said supervisors and principals are reviewing master schedules and IEPs to ensure student schedules meet individual needs, and that the department is working in‑school to adjust master schedules to better address students’ services.
Board members praised the work, with one member saying families had moved students into the district in recent weeks citing special education services as a reason. Pellegrino and others said the district will explore recognizing outstanding student achievements at a future meeting and that a regional Special Olympics basketball tournament will use the gyms at Terrebonne and Houma Junior High on the last Saturday of the month.
