Board members read the proclamation aloud, which praises Louisiana’s retired teachers for “devot[ing] their careers to the education and training of tens of thousands” of students, for leadership in their communities, and for continuing to serve in retirement. The proclamation directs that copies be forwarded to all Terrebonne Parish schools and office buildings.
The item prompted extended remarks from former board member Clyde Hamner, who told the board that retired teachers remain influential in state policy debates. Hamner cited the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset — long-time federal rules affecting some educator retirement benefits — and said retired educators’ advocacy helped win the change. “When you retire from education, you don’t go out to pasture,” Hamner said, describing retirees’ continued service on boards, commissions and as public advocates.
Board members thanked the retirees in attendance and commented on the practical effects of the advocacy described by Hamner. Matthew Ford said, “I’m just glad we won’t have to worry about COVID day being March 20 anymore. Now it’s going to be retired,” drawing light applause. Other members, including Roger DeHart and Michael Lagarde, praised retirees’ influence and urged continued involvement on state policy issues, including easing limits on retired educators who want to return to work.
The board then invited retired teachers forward for a group photo and presentation of certificates.
The motion to recognize March 20, 2025, as Retired Teachers Day passed without recorded objections.
