State project for Exit 1 access presented to town; roundabout alternative and wetland impacts discussed

Town Manager David told the Board of Selectmen on March 18 that state representatives and the project manager for the Exit 1 project presented several access alternatives and identified a significant wetland impact that will affect design.
David said the project team ran the town through “3 or 4 alternatives” and that one alternative involving a roundabout appears feasible and could allow the town to patch its portion of roadway to connect with the state project. He said the drawings have been available and that the team “really started doing some digging and found there was a large wetland impact.”
Board members asked about local review and public access to the materials. Resident Sandy Crystal asked whether the planning board would see the materials; David said the project is expected to be presented to the Business Development Committee (BDC) at its next meeting and that any materials from the BDC meeting could be made available to the planning board or the public. The project team is scheduled to present to the BDC, according to staff statements recorded in the meeting.
When asked about timing, staff relayed that the project timeline discussed by presenters is long-term; one participant noted “2032, I think that was about what they're saying.” The board did not take a formal vote on the project at the March 18 meeting; the item was informational and the project team will continue outreach through scheduled committee meetings.
