Resident urges Longleaf flood recovery efforts; county highlights CDBG outreach

Kelly Saxon, a Longleaf-area resident, told the commission that Longleaf and other communities continue to face severe flooding damage from recent storms and urged the county to include community organizations in recovery planning.
"My hope is that the county will actively promote and participate in response to secure much-needed funding for hardworking Lowndes County residents," Saxon said, describing homes that remain damaged and families who are not yet back in their houses. She asked that community organizations be included in planning and stressed the need for long-term recovery preparations ahead of future storm seasons.
County manager Miss Dukes said commissioners and staff had attended a regional Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) meeting and that the regional commission committed to helping nonprofits navigate the grant process. Miss Dukes said county staff will follow up with nonprofits that requested assistance and noted that the county is exploring infrastructure projects that might be eligible for CDBG funding.
Miss Dukes also announced a public appearance by Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones at the Historic Courthouse the next day and said the county planned a brief press event to publicize the new homestead-exemption proposal. Saxon’s remarks were made during the citizens-wishing-to-be-heard portion of the meeting; the county's CDBG comments occurred during the county-manager report earlier in the session.
