Hughes School students and alumni led a multi-year process to propose an official school mascot, and trustees voiced public support March 17.
Principal Dr. Williams said students initiated the effort, solicited alumni feedback and narrowed many suggestions to a single mark the school now proposes to use as its mascot and identity mark. "Students have learned to lift their voice," Williams told the board, describing student government and community engagement that produced the design.
Trustees offered public encouragement. Several board members praised student leadership and alumni participation; Board Member Craig said the board would not stand in the way of a student- and community-driven decision. Vice President Bolton asked administration to treat the submission as a notice of the school’s intent and encouraged principals to work with communications and community partners on rollout, ensuring trademark and brand considerations are handled appropriately.
No formal board policy change or vote was required; trustees said they supported the Hughes community’s process and recommended proceeding with local implementation steps.
What’s next: Hughes will coordinate with district communications and supply teams for rollout, uniforms and signage as appropriate and in line with district trademark and procurement policies.
