Chinese exchange students visit Plymouth schools, present experiences to School Committee

A group of teachers and seven students from Siangaoshi No. 1 High School in Shanxi province, China, visited Plymouth and presented about their exchange experience during the March 17 School Committee meeting.

Grace, the visiting teacher, told the committee the program is "like a friendship bridge spanning the Pacific Ocean," and outlined the school’s history, international-applicant outcomes and ties with Plymouth North and Plymouth South High Schools. She said the visiting students had been hosted by several local families and attended classes at both high schools, enrolling in electives such as oceanography, U.S. history and world literature.

Two visiting students addressed the committee. Andrea described feeling anxious on arrival but praised her host family and teachers, saying the experience improved her English and confidence; she told the committee she is now considering U.S. universities. Boris described cultural and language challenges at first, then said the host families’ patience and invitations to social activities helped him feel integrated.

School Committee members thanked host families and district staff for hosting the visitors. Ms. Jackson, who said she hosted a student, described the exchange as "a wonderful experience" for her household.

Why it matters: district administrators said the exchange deepens cultural understanding and builds long-term relationships between Plymouth students and partner schools in China. Committee members encouraged continued support for exchange programs that provide host-family experiences and curricular connections across district schools.

No vote was required; the segment was a ceremonial welcome and informational presentation.
