Cannon Falls staff previews PFAS management work; engineering agreement with WHKS to be presented

City staff told the council March 18 that an engineering agreement to engage WHKS to assist with PFAS management will be presented at the next council meeting.
Bill explained that PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemicals used in stain- and heat-resistant products and that the city has detected PFAS in its wastewater system, not in the drinking-water supply. Staff said the city applied for a PFAS grant to support additional testing, the purchase of an automatic sampler and outreach to local industries to reduce sources of PFAS entering the sewer system.
Staff reported targeted sampling at industry effluent points and certain manholes; they cited specific sampling of effluent from businesses (the transcript names "Gemini and Canon equipment" in the sampling examples). Staff said the goal of the grant and the engineering work is source reduction, because PFAS removal from wastewater is difficult.
The council received the update as an informational item; staff indicated the engineering agreement with WHKS will come forward for approval at a future meeting.
