The Statesboro Mayor and Council on March 18 approved giving notice to terminate the city’s automatic aid agreement with Bulloch County, with the termination set to take effect July 1, 2025.
City staff told the council the move is intended to meet the 90-day notice requirement in the existing agreement and to clarify the city’s responsibilities after Bulloch County’s recent move to cancel a separate fire district agreement. City staff said giving notice does not prevent future agreements or cooperation between the city and county.
Mister King, a city staff member who presented the item to the council, explained that the county commission previously voted to cancel the fire district agreement effective in February and that the automatic aid agreement is a separate document that requires 90 days’ notice to terminate. King asked the council to approve giving notice of the city’s intent to end automatic aid effective July 1, 2025.
A council member who spoke during discussion said the city remains open to working with the county but expressed concern about Statesboro taxpayers subsidizing fire service outside city limits. After brief discussion, a council member moved to give notice and the council voted in favor.
City staff and council emphasized that the action is procedural: if Bulloch County or local parties want to continue or reestablish mutual aid or to negotiate different terms, they may do so before or after the July 1 effective date.
The council did not provide a roll-call vote tally in the meeting transcript; the clerk recorded the motion and the mayor asked, “All those in favor?” to which members answered “Aye.”
