Two residents spoke during the public-comment portion of the March 18 Mentor City Council meeting, pressing the council on accountability, term limits and past endorsements.
Jean King of 8447 Trimble Court told the council she supports term limits and criticized how the city government operates. King said opinion polling shows strong support for term limits and remarked on the city’s manager–council form of government and low turnout in local elections. "I mentioned last time that opinion polls consistently indicated 80 of people support term limits," King said. She criticized recent spending decisions and said some facilities and parks were not being maintained to her satisfaction.
Brian Mansfield, who identified himself as a resident of 9190 Veil Court, Monroe, said the council had endorsed candidates he characterized as problematic and urged the council to withdraw endorsements. Mansfield described a constituent facing foreclosure and alleged failures in oversight of funds, saying the council had not required audits or accounting review. "You can start by publicly withdrawing your endorsement," he said.
A council member responded from the dais to the allegations of endorsement, saying, "this councilman didn't endorse anybody," and indicating the council would not uniformly accept the claim. The exchange concluded without formal council action on the assertions made during public comment.
Public comment items do not carry a council vote but were recorded in the meeting record; the council did not take immediate formal action in response to the statements during this session.
