The Oviedo Public Arts Board discussed a proposed call to artists for a sculpture sited in the semicircular lawn on Oviedo Boulevard and tabled the proposal while staff gathers further information on likely fabrication costs, installation needs and vandal‑resistance.
Staff described the site as approximately 42 feet in length with a maximum height of about 13 feet and said the area would serve as a visually prominent location for a piece of public sculpture. The staff proposal suggested a $25,000 stipend for design and execution, up to $5,000 for installation, and up to $5,000 for lighting; board members noted material and fabrication costs (for example, bronze or fabricated steel) could consume much of that amount.
Board members discussed options: open call to artists, direct purchase of an existing work, or a staged procurement where the city solicits concepts within a budget and then revises the budget if proposals do not meet expectations. Members suggested consulting the Central Florida Sculptors Guild and local fabricators and reviewing recent purchases (three pieces previously purchased for about $87,000 combined) to set realistic expectations.
A motion to table the sculpture call to artists passed by voice vote; staff was instructed to return with additional size visualizations, comparable pricing and options for installation and anti‑vandal measures. The board noted that final approval for any purchase or installation would rest with the CRA or City Council depending on funding source.
