Board tables decision on three-year farm lease, discusses rebidding and term length

The Page County Board of Supervisors tabled consideration of the county farm lease until the next meeting to allow additional input and to review options for the lease term and bidding process.
A board member recommended tabling the item because the county’s farm lease process and lessee input were not fully available: “I would say we table that to next meeting,” the member said. Board discussion noted the current lease form is a three-year contract and that the county posts the farm lease for sealed bids. Some board members suggested considering a longer term — for example, a five-year lease — on the grounds that a longer term can incentivize a lessee to care for the land “like you own it.”
The board agreed to prepare bid materials and to put the lease out for sealed bid in the spring (suggested May or June) so that everything is completed before the county must give notice to the landowner by Sept. 1. No formal vote on a new lease was taken; the item was deferred to the next meeting when Justin (the current lessee) or staff can be present to provide input.
