School Committee member Aguiar moved to add a $75,000 HR recruiter line to the FY26 budget to expand recruitment capacity; several members argued the district needs more HR resources to accelerate hiring and improve applicant outreach.
HR Director O’Malley and Superintendent Curley responded that the district recently filled a human-resources coordinator vacancy and that a fuller assessment of HR capacity and needs would be possible after the new staff member is in place. The superintendent and some committee members urged allowing the administration time to implement recent hires and evaluate whether an additional dedicated recruiter is necessary or whether existing positions can be re-tasked.
After discussion the motion to add the $75,000 recruiter line failed on roll call; committee members who supported the amendment argued the district has historically struggled to recruit teachers and staff and that a targeted recruiter would be a cost-effective intervention. Members who voted no said they preferred to let the new HR coordinator and existing staff demonstrate results and to avoid creating new recurring personnel costs without an operational plan.
Ending
Superintendent Curley agreed to present a short assessment of HR staff structure, recruitment pipelines and candidate pools at a future meeting so the committee could consider a targeted recruiter or other options in a subsequent budget action.
