Mackie Park final ADA ramp awaits Verizon pole moves and contract funds; committee grants more time

The Economic and Community Development Committee heard an update on March 14 about outstanding work to bring Mackie Park into full ADA compliance and voted to keep the item on the committee calendar until the work is completed.
Director Stevens reported that the final ramp at Mackie Park is awaiting completion of a contract with Perkins, under which Verizon will move several utility poles. "Once the poles are removed," Stevens said, "the asphalt will be removed and then the sidewalk is concreted over for the final concrete there." She added that the project currently has funds set aside and that any remaining costs will be covered by funds that are encumbered under the Park Street Park project once those funds are released.
A committee member noted visible "double poles" at the Park Street Park location; a speaker who addressed the committee explained that the asphalt in that area was a temporary cover where old poles remain and that new poles have already been installed. The committee then considered a motion to allow more time for repairs and remediation. President Tyrus moved to grant more time; the motion was seconded by Councilor Heath. With no discussion, the committee chair put the question and members responded in the affirmative; the motion passed.
Committee members emphasized that pole relocation and fund unencumbrance are the last steps needed to close out the Park Street Park and Mackie Park remediation work.
