Public Works Director Aaron Nicks told council the city budgeted $40,000 for design of a mid‑block crossing that would mirror improvements made near the high school: a refuge island, flashing beacons and new overhead signage. Nicks said the existing overhead sign has been damaged “a couple of times” and likely needs replacement.
Nicks emphasized the action before council was for design only. “We do not have construction funds for this. We are purely doing a design effort right now to get it ready so that we can get funds to construct,” he said, describing staff hopes to secure grant money in a future capital improvement cycle.
A council member moved and the motion was seconded to place resolution number 1350Dash09224 (design and bidding services for a mid‑block pedestrian improvement project) on the April 1 action agenda for further consideration; the motion passed by voice vote. The council’s roll call at the start of the meeting indicated seven members present; the motion carried unanimously on the voice vote recorded at the meeting.
Staff estimated a final design would be ready by August if the design contract proceeds and said future construction would depend on grant funding or CIP allocation.
