The Transportation Commission approved staff’s annual traffic signal priority list and accepted recommendations to pursue three new traffic signals after study.
Staff presented the final recommendation list for annual signal review. Of nine studied intersections, three were recommended for signal installation: the West Washington/Southwest Commuter Path crossing (already approved under a separate OCR order and meeting pedestrian warrants), Milwaukee Street & Sprecher Road (meets volume warrants; some signal infrastructure already in place from prior reconstruction), and Fish Hatchery Road & Martin Street (proposed to support a relocated Cannonball Path crossing and to replace an RFB near a nearby railroad crossing). Staff explained the Henry Mall crosswalk and other locations did not meet signal warrants or have mitigating conditions such as existing nearby signals.
Commissioner Robbie moved to approve staff recommendations; Commissioner Denise seconded. After discussion about alternatives (roundabout versus signal at Milwaukee & Sprecher), commissioners approved the list by unanimous consent. Staff said further steps will include design authorization, assessment district work if required, and public works contracting for those signals that move forward.
