Madison Transportation Commission approves resolution honoring Renee Calloway on her retirement

The Madison Transportation Commission unanimously approved a resolution honoring Renee Calloway for her service to the city, including work on pedestrian and bicycle programs, the Complete Green Streets Guide and Vision Zero efforts.
The resolution, read by commissioners and city staff, said Calloway joined the City of Madison as a Pedestrian Bicycle Administrator in Traffic Engineering in 2019, was promoted to assistant director in 2024, co-managed the Complete Green Streets Guide and Vision Zero initiatives, led Safe Streets Madison and helped transfer the school crossing guard program from the police department to traffic engineering. Chair Anne opened the item and Commissioners Yang and Tom joined in reading the resolution before the commission moved to adopt it by unanimous consent.
Commission members and city staff described Calloway as a leading local expert in biking and pedestrian safety. Robbie Weber said she has known Calloway for “25 years or maybe more” and praised her work; Alder (Ald.) Govindarajan and others recounted specific examples of her work and collaboration across city teams. Calloway told the commission she was “bittersweet” about leaving but excited to walk and bike more in retirement.
The commission’s formal action was adoption of the honoring resolution. Chair Anne called for unanimous consent; no member objected and the commission recorded the resolution as passed unanimously. Staff said they will provide Calloway a copy of the resolution.
The commission resumed business after the vote and noted the resolution will be shared with Calloway. The resolution lists her last day as March 20, 2025.
