District proposes press box, concessions and fencing upgrades at softball field; student-built option under discussion

A staff presenter said the concrete work for the press-box pad and access (including a sidewalk and footings for stairs) came in at about $10,300. A single construction estimate for the press box structure itself was about $24,900; staff said they are discussing whether the district’s building-trades program could participate in the construction to reduce costs but noted student-safety and timing constraints because the structure would be two stories.
Staff also proposed enclosing the softball field and raising the backstop because balls have occasionally gone over the existing backstop and into a drainage area; the presenter noted the cost of losing softballs (cited at approximately $10–15 each) as part of the rationale for the backstop work. The upgrades would include trenching power from nearby restroom facilities to supply the press box and concession area.
Staff said these projects would be funded from existing capital/revenue accounts (similar to recent Falcon Fuel projects) and that the work would be scheduled for summer to avoid student disruption. No formal contract award or vote occurred at the meeting; staff will continue to refine quotes and timing.
