Wakulla County seeks $1.55 million from FWC to improve three boat ramps

County staff told the Board of County Commissioners on March 17 that Wakulla County will submit three applications to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Florida Boating Improvement Program seeking a total of $1,547,500 for boat-ramp projects.
The projects described in the staff report are: design funding for a new concrete boat ramp and a floating dock at Newport Boat Ramp; construction funding for dredging the canal serving Mashes Sands Boat Ramp; and construction funding for a new floating dock and parking improvements at the Wakulla River Boat Ramp at U.S. 98. Staff said a match is not required but that offering one raises an application’s score; the county proposed a 5% match equal to $77,375 drawn from the county’s boating-improvement fund to strengthen the applications.
Applications to FWC are due on or before April 8, 2025, staff said. If a project is awarded, the county will return to the board with the grant agreement and any required resolution and budget amendment for formal acceptance and implementation.
A citizen speaker, Jerry DeLuca, addressed the board after the item and urged maintenance and debris removal on local beaches and boat-access areas, noting storm damage at Mashes Sands and asking for clearer public updates on status and timetables for beach work.
