Committee forwards six policy revisions, including tobacco and school-calendar changes, to the Board for action
Summary

The Education and Pupil Services Committee heard a summary of proposed revisions to six district policies on Oct. 22 and agreed to forward the changes to the full Board for approval at a future meeting.
Board member DeSnoris summarized the affected policies: 2.22 (tobacco and vaping products); 2.27 (controlled substances and paraphernalia); 2.34 (pregnant, parenting, married students); 2.47 (hazing); 2.49 (bullying and cyberbullying); and 8.03 (school calendar). DeSnoris said the revisions include compliance-driven edits tied to recent state law changes and federal regulations; for example, Policy 2.22 removes references to a product marketed as JUUL consistent with PA Act 33 of 2023 updates to the school code.
DeSnoris told the committee that policies 2.34, 2.47 and 2.49 are being updated to align with 2024 Title IX regulations. He also said Policy 8.03 (school calendar) is being revised in response to PA Act 56 of 2023, which allows districts to meet required instructional time by hours rather than being limited strictly to a specified number of days.
The committee did not adopt the policies at the meeting; DeSnoris reminded members that the proposed edits require a future board motion and approval to take effect. The committee agreed to move the policy package forward for formal Board consideration at the next meeting.
No formal vote counts were recorded in the committee to forward the items; staff described the changes as technical and compliance updates and encouraged members to review the policy-change summaries posted from the Aug. 27 special voting meeting.
The policies, if approved by the full Board, will take effect consistent with Board procedures and statutory timelines described in the policy summaries posted to BoardDocs.
