Whitnall honors winter-season athletes, coaches and state qualifiers

The board held its annual winter activities recognition, with coaches and student-athletes from basketball, cheer, dance, swimming, wrestling, gymnastics and more reporting season highlights, records and state qualifications.
At its March 18 meeting, the Whitnall School District Board of Education recognized coaches and student-athletes for achievements during the winter sports and activities season.
Andrew Wojcick, introduced himself as a first-year head coach for the boys basketball program and described a 17–10 overall finish and a 10–2 conference record; the team reached regional-champion status, and players received conference honors. "We finished 17 and 10 overall, 10 and 2 in conference," Wojcick said, and the coach described a seven-game winning streak that followed a six-game losing run.
Coaches and staff honored included the boys and girls basketball teams (girls reported a 21–4 season, an 11-game win streak and back-to-back conference championships), cheer (qualified for the national championship in Florida for the second time in program history), varsity dance (multiple WACPC state placements including first-place finishes in some categories), bowling (two state qualifiers), gymnastics (co-op with Oak Creek finished as state runner-up; four Whitnall students were on the co-op team), boys swim and dive (Woodland Conference champions; multiple state qualifiers and relay and individual records; coach Perry Perkins noted a conference victory "by 3 points" and said one swimmer set a state 500 record), and wrestling (the Whitnall–Greendale coop finished with a 13–11 dual record and multiple conference placings and individual state qualifiers).
Individual achievements noted on the record board and in coach remarks included Jack Lutz (first-team all-conference; second-leading all-time scorer in Whitnall history per the coach), Miles Hero (first-team all-conference and 1,000-point scorer), Riley Ward (girls basketball junior and all-time leading scorer for Whitnall with approximately 1,200 points), and other scholar-athlete and captain recognitions. The swim program said it qualified in 10 of 12 events at state and set school records in relays.
Coaches thanked players, families and booster organizations. The board invited athletes and coaches to remain after the meeting for group photographs.
The recognition item was ceremonial; no board action was required.
