Turnpike PD&E concept for Sterling Road interchange presented to Davie council; Seminole land and sound walls discussed

Town Engineer Jonathan Voigt briefed the Town of Davie Council on a conceptual Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study for a new Turnpike interchange near Sterling Road and North 60th Drive. The presentation described proposed southbound and northbound on/off ramps, a new widened bridge, shared pedestrian and bicycle paths and a possible flyover alignment into Seminole property.

Voigt said the study area runs from Southwest 58th Avenue to just east of State Road 7. The concept shown to council would add southbound on/off ramps at the west side of the bridge and northbound on/off ramps and a flyover on the east side, and would widen the bridge to accommodate additional lanes and multimodal paths.

Staff and council discussed neighborhood impacts. Voigt said Seminole-owned land west of the Turnpike (former trailer-park parcels shown in the study materials) would be used for some ramp connections and stormwater retention; he said the PD&E will evaluate access changes and recommended mitigation, including a sound wall between the highway and adjacent homes where appropriate. Council members asked about timing, where the sound wall would be sited relative to lakes and homes, and whether the project would reduce congestion at Griffin Road; staff said the PD&E is early-stage, public meetings will be scheduled in coming months, and the project is intended to reduce congestion in the corridor.

No formal action was taken; staff provided the briefing for information and said the Turnpike and Seminole stakeholders will return with more detailed plans and public outreach later in the PD&E schedule.

Council members asked staff to forward the PD&E presentation and to advise when public meetings are scheduled so the council’s MPO representative and neighborhood groups can participate.
