The Glynn County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 6 approved multiple routine and contested agenda items across planning, licensing and legislative requests and directed further work on proposed local legislation.
Key votes included approval of an abandonment of an unopened alley (AB 24‑4) after staff and the applicant corrected an address for one parcel; approval of a conditional use permit for native landscaping seaward of development setback lines at 108 E. 20th Street on Sea Island (CUP‑24‑10108); and approval of a planned‑development amendment (ZM‑24‑24) to add surface mining as an allowed use for about 58 acres at 7580 Golden Isles Parkway to allow extraction of dirt as part of a future residential project. The board also approved two 2025 alcoholic beverage licenses: one for Capital Square Partners LLC doing business as La Quinta Inn & Suites (Prayan Patel, 100 Capital Square Drive) to sell malt beverages and wine on the premises of a hotel (no Sunday sales), and one for Vasoia LLC d/b/a Motel 6 (Hiram Vasoya, 3040 Scarlet Street) to sell malt beverages, wine and liquor for on‑premises hotel consumption (Sunday sales permitted as noted on the agenda).
For the AB 24‑4 abandonment, Jason Hartman, Glynn County engineering director, described the unopened alley area being considered and said the parcel totals about 0.1028 acres (roughly 4,479 square feet). Applicant Michael Dyke said he represented four property owners and asked the board to approve the abandonment; commissioners approved the motion with one commissioner amending the record to correct the Dixon Lane address to 2128 Dixon Lane before the vote.
Stephanie Leif, planning and zoning director, presented the Sea Island conditional use permit. Leif said the shoreline work is tied to the state permitting process and that the county’s review is intended to confirm the proposed native landscaping seaward of the development setback complies with county zoning before the applicant seeks a DNR permit. The county said the Planning Commission recommended approval.
The Golden Isles Parkway rezone (ZM‑24‑24) was presented by Jake Lemmings of Robert Civil Engineering and recommended to the board by the Planning Commission; staff said a state surface‑mining permit and the Development of Regional Impact process have also been completed for the project site. The board approved the zoning amendment.
On local legislation the board opened a public hearing on three draft requests to the state legislature: (1) increase the hotel/motel lodging tax from 5% to 7%; (2) adjust and increase base salaries of Glynn County commissioners; and (3) permit a county commissioner to serve on the Brunswick‑Glynn County Development Authority as a commissioner‑appointed seat. No public speakers opposed these items at the hearing; commissioners agreed to take the items "under further advisement," split and prepare detailed materials and proposed language to present at an upcoming work session and the county’s legislative delegation meetings.
The board also moved into executive session to discuss property matters and pending litigation, approved the executive session minutes from Jan. 16, 2025 on return and then adjourned.
