Board approves consent agenda, reappoints member and schedules Project Ascend public hearing

The Iredell County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved its agenda and a consent package of administrative items, reappointed one member to a county board, appointed one new advisory-board member and scheduled a public hearing for an economic-development matter following a closed session.
The board voted unanimously to approve the evening’s agenda and to place a series of administrative requests on the consent agenda. The consent items the board approved included a request from finance to approve budget amendment No. 30, an amendment to the Weathers Creek project ordinance to include bond proceeds and the county contribution, and multiple departmental grant applications and contract actions.
County staff listed the consent items during a pre-agenda summary. Those items included: a request from emergency medical services to submit a $5,000 grant application to the Walmart Spark Good Local program to support EMS Week and EMS’s 50th anniversary; a request from veteran services to apply for the DMVA County Veterans Office grant in the amount of $20,000; a library renewal of a three-year contract with Zubin and Beanstalk with no price increase; a library grant application for $9,000 to the University of Washington Information School for a community archive project (in collaboration with Cooperative Extension); a request from Duke University Health System for assignment consent related to the sale of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center (contingent on the seller closing later this month); tax-administration releases and refunds for February 2025; an administrative update to the county incentive certification and special teams approved programs; and approval of the minutes from the Feb. 18, 2025 Board of Commissioners meeting.
The board approved two appointments during the meeting: Allen Simmons was reappointed as an alternate member of the Board of Equalization and Review, and Dustin Jett was appointed to the Iredell County Transportation Advisory Board.
During a report out from a closed session on economic development held earlier in the day under North Carolina General Statute 143, Commissioner Howe moved to call a public hearing on Project Ascend for April 1, 2025, at 6 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. The public hearing call was the only formal action reported from the closed session.
Other items on the agenda included a county parks update and recognition of the county’s animal services partnership with PetSmart Charities; county staff said the parks’ playing fields at Jennings Park are ready and the park’s grand reopening is scheduled Thursday with other amenities to follow.
