Board proclaims World Hijab Day; Coralville library event announced

Speakers representing Mariam Girls Club and the Muslim community thanked the supervisors for the proclamation and described the purpose of World Hijab Day as an opportunity to educate and normalize the hijab as a choice and symbol of faith. At the meeting Tamira Abdalla, identified as a community resource navigator at the Coralville Public Library, said this is the third year the library has hosted a World Hijab Day event and invited residents to a program that begins at noon and runs until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Abdalla said the event will include free scarves, an explanation of the reasons people wear the hijab and a screening of the film Life Without Basketball, which addresses the challenges of Muslim girls playing sports while wearing the hijab.
Why it matters: The proclamation is ceremonial but the accompanying event is intended to provide local public education, reduce stigma and offer community programming for youth and families.
Meeting details: The board approved the proclamation by roll call with no recorded dissents. Speakers at the meeting emphasized community education, invited the public to the Coralville Public Library program and noted translated materials will be available.
