Rotary and ambulance service seek county support to expand AED registry and outreach; supervisors authorize chair to sign letter

Fiona Johnson, director of Johnson County Ambulance Service, updated the board on the Rotary Curb Heart Safe Community Campaign’s work and requested county support to distribute an email survey to businesses and nonprofits to map AED availability and interest in the program’s AED cost-sharing initiative.
Johnson said the county and Rotary have collaborated for five years and reported that the county has 552 AEDs registered in the AED registry and about 4,300 PulsePoint users. The Rotary program has helped more than 50 local businesses and nonprofits procure AEDs through a cost-share program and supported the installation of more than 40 24/7 AED enclosures at public sites; the most recent enclosure was placed at Napoleon Park Softball Complex in Iowa City, she said.
The proposed next steps are an emailed survey (to replace a less-successful mailed survey) to identify AEDs, encourage PulsePoint registration, and gauge interest in the cost-share program; Johnson said the ambulance service’s new CareSEAT committee will support public education, registry upkeep, and a survivorship program. Supervisors indicated support and gave a head nod authorizing the chair to affix his signature to the outreach letter. The item did not require formal action on that day.
