Douglas County commissioners support bill adding correctional and juvenile detention officers to in-state tuition benefit

Douglas County commissioners voted unanimously on March 11 to support Legislative Bill LB608, which would expand the First Responder Recruitment and Retention Act’s definitions so that correctional officers and juvenile detention officers qualify for the in-state tuition benefit now available to firefighters and law enforcement.
Marcus Sammartin of Douglas County administration briefed the board, saying the bill was filed by Senator Bostar of Lincoln and was requested by county corrections staff. “This particular bill would… expand that definition to include correctional officers and juvenile detention officers,” Sammartin told the board, describing the change as an inclusion of two additional qualifying occupations.
Commissioner Cavanaugh moved to support the measure; Commissioner Morgan seconded. The motion passed 7–0.
County staff clarified that the tuition reimbursement and associated fund remain state-administered under the First Responder Recruitment and Retention Act; board action was a formal expression of support and not a funding commitment by the county.
