The Glynn County Finance Committee voted to relinquish $524,530.92 in county-held excess funds resulting from property tax-sales to the Glynn County Tax Commissioner so the tax office can assume responsibility for locating rightful owners and disbursing the money.
County finance staff explained the funds are proceeds that exceeded back taxes, interest and penalties at tax sales; when such surpluses remain, they should be returned to the original owners but locating claimants can be difficult. A finance staff member described the history: "At some point, many, many, many years ago, this was given to the finance department... it sat there."
Committee members said the tax commissioner’s office has more active resources for locating claimants, and the tax commissioner told the committee his office aims to disperse the funds to rightful owners within a year. County staff also noted that unclaimed funds can, after statutory time periods, be turned over to the state, which reduces the chance of recovery for owners if the funds remain unclaimed.
The committee approved the transfer and the tax commissioner's office will maintain the fund moving forward and begin outreach to locate claimants.
