Council recognizes veterans volunteers, awards fundraising proceeds and plans Veterans Park improvements

The Town’s Veterans Committee reported net proceeds from the recent Reindeer Run race and outlined scholarship and local veteran assistance programs to the council March 18.
Committee chair Bill Perez (Veterans Committee) reported net race proceeds of $37,600 and said $18,800 would be donated to the town’s veterans monument fund; total fundraising support for veterans activities since committee inception was cited at more than $28,800 toward local veteran services. The committee asked the council to restore a Memorial Day line item in the town budget and asked for a small town contribution toward a Veterans Park monument; committee materials indicated a contracted design cost of about $36,000 for the monument and the committee requested the town chip in an estimated $8,000.
The committee also described scholarship awards (the Veterans Scholarship Fund), donations to the local American Legion post and emergency assistance for individual veterans in need; the committee proposed a veterans directory web page and a QR‑coded historical display for Veterans Park so visitors can tap a code to see biographical information for banners and memorialized service members.
Council members thanked the Veterans Committee for fundraising and outreach work. Vice Mayor Moreira and several council members voiced support for the monument allocation and for the committee’s scholarship program. The council accepted the committee’s report and authorized staff to work with the committee on monument funding and signage details.
