The Miami Lakes Mental Health Task Force agreed to hold a Responding with Compassion workshop to explain mobile-response alternatives and to educate residents and providers on how to interact with first responders during mental-health crises.
Staff and committee members described the workshop as a community education event featuring clinicians from WestCare/Thriving Minds and local law enforcement. A task-force member said WestCare’s mobile response staff (named in the meeting as Lucia and Ocha) would present statistics, describe how to request mobile response instead of a traditional 911 patrol response, and explain the team’s geographic coverage and contact procedures.
The committee emphasized the workshop’s practical goals: teach family members, school staff and community providers how to seek a clinician-led mobile response and how to communicate effectively when calling for help so officers understand the situation on arrival. One staff speaker described a suggested script for callers so responders know to bring mobile clinicians and de-escalation resources.
The committee created a small subcommittee to organize the event and set a planning meeting date for April 10 (Thursday) at 4 p.m. Committee members asked staff to confirm Officer Amador’s availability as the law-enforcement liaison and to confirm the names and availability of the WestCare/Thriving Minds presenters so the task force can finalize the flyer and run-of-show for outreach.
The workshop is tentatively scheduled for mid-May (meeting discussion referenced May 16) in the early evening so working residents can attend. Staff will handle room/audio logistics, speaker confirmations, and outreach; committee members will assist with sponsorships and light refreshment planning under the already-approved educational-program allocation.
