The board heard a presentation and video about Leadership HT, a school–city partnership that places students on city-focused projects. Students described completed projects (welcome sign, greenway bridges, community garden, emergency blue lights and directional signage) and said they will present new proposals to city boards.
School and city leaders showcased Leadership HT, a year-long course linking Hewitt-Trussville High School students to municipal projects and community partners, and students presented city-improvement projects they have completed and plan to pursue.
"This program connects the classroom to the community," said Amber Benson, business academy teacher, in a video played for the board. Students explained the selection process — faculty nominations, application scoring and interviews with industry professionals — and described the program’s aims: leadership development, networking and real-world project experience.
Students and staff listed completed projects that the program said were delivered with community partners and city support, including a "Welcome to Downtown Trussville" sign on Main Street, greenway bridges, a community garden at the public library, emergency blue lights on the greenway, sports complex directional signs and updated signage for the John LeMaster disc golf course. Presenters said Leadership HT has produced more than 80 alumni and that student projects often respond to city priorities.
Students said they will present two school-focused city improvement proposals to the city council on April 3 and will seek feedback from other city bodies. Mayor’s representative Lisa Bright and city staff were credited in the video and in remarks for ongoing collaboration. Superintendent Dr. Martin and Amber Benson praised the program’s community partnerships and the student teams for their presentations.
Students asked board members and community members to offer expertise, time or funding for current projects; no formal board action was required.
