Council moves forward on contracting for transit operations; procurement to be advertised

The council authorized administration to advertise and solicit bids for an operator to provide turnkey operation and maintenance services for the city’s transportation program, including vehicle operations, maintenance of FTA assets, dispatch and driver training.
Sponsor Myers and staff described the intent to contract with a turnkey transit provider to bring professional operations and driver training to the city’s emerging transit services. Staff said a facility previously used as a temporary fire station (near the county dog shelter) could be repurposed for vehicle storage, driver space and dispatch. The council heard questions about office space, scheduling and whether the city would lease or provide the facility; staff said the building had adequate garage and office space and that arrangements will be part of procurement discussions.
Councilors agreed to advertise the project and bid a contract; because of timing and member absence, the council did not suspend rules for immediate award and the item will return for final action at a subsequent meeting.
