The Committee on Finance voted unanimously, 13–0, to report Senate Bill 1415, which would move Texas’ back‑to‑school sales tax holiday to the first weekend after July 30.
Senator Bettencourt explained that school start dates have shifted earlier in many districts, creating a mismatch between the August tax holiday and actual start dates. The bill would change the holiday date to better align the tax‑free weekend with earlier uniform school start dates.
Jennifer Easley, president of Texas PTA, testified in support on behalf of nearly half a million members, saying the change would make the holiday “more beneficial to families, especially given the evolving school start dates” and help families purchase supplies and clothing without stretching tight budgets.
After receiving no opposing testimony, the committee approved the motion to report the bill favorably to the full Senate by voice vote and recorded 13 ayes, no nays on the roll call.
The committee certified the bill for the local and uncontested calendar without objection.
