Lincoln County students honored for Young Riders writing contest and Math Field Day; several place at regionals

The Lincoln County Board of Education recognized student winners of the district’s Young Riders writing contest and announced Math Field Day results during its March 18 meeting in Hamlin.

Superintendent Barnett introduced the awards. Among Young Riders county first‑place winners named on the record: Sophia Dingus (first place, grades 1–2, Hamlin PK‑8), Amelia Adkins (first place, grades 3–4, Harts PK‑8), Macy Bender (first place, grades 5–6, Harts PK‑8), Shaylin Fraker (first place, grades 7–8, Arts PKA), Madison Miller (first place, grades 9–10), and Alexis Johnson (first place, grades 11–12). Teachers for winning entries were announced alongside student names during the recognition.

The board also recognized Math Field Day participants and county winners by grade. Noted county winners and alternates included Connor Woodrum (first place, grade 6, Duval PK‑8), Colton Cantrell (first place, grade 7, Guyan Valley Middle School) and Ethan Cooper (first place, grade 9, Lincoln County High School). The district reported several regional placements: Colton Cantrell placed second at regionals in seventh grade; Paxton Cook was an alternate at regionals; Kyler (Tyler) Blair placed among regional alternates for eighth grade; Ethan Cooper won first place at regionals for ninth grade. The county team finished third in the regional competition.

Why it matters: The recognitions highlight districtwide student achievement in writing and mathematics and showcase the county’s competitive performance at regionals.

The board invited students, teachers and families to take photographs and refreshments were offered after the presentations.
