Board to review district support for student trips after oversight on Disneyland band supplemental coverage

Board member Mr. Barrett asked the board to consider a district-wide discussion about which student trips the district should support after the music department sought supplemental health-care coverage for a band trip to Disneyland in California.
Barrett said that over recent years many sports programs have moved to independently organized travel, and he asked whether that policy should apply uniformly to other student groups. He said the district being billed for items left uncovered by fundraising “isn’t fair to taxpayers” and urged the board to address the question before next year’s trips.
An administrator responding to Barrett said the California trip was an oversight in planning and that there had been an assumption of medical reciprocity with other states; the administrator said they would work with the music team and provide information to the board in April on the nature and frequency of district-sponsored trips so the board can decide what level of district support is appropriate.
Board members agreed it would be prudent to discuss the issue ahead of the normal May approvals for overnight trips so any policy direction is in place before next year’s requests.
