Board hears first reads of three policies; device policy to remove GPS trackers and add recording‑device language

The Hampton City School Board heard first reads March 12 of three board policies, including proposed language changes to policy JP (all‑electronic devices). Miss Hatcher (staff) told the board the recommended change would remove GPS trackers from the list of devices in policy JP and add explanatory language for parents about devices that can listen or record and transmit those recordings.
"We would like to ask that GPS trackers be taken out of the policy in the list of devices," Miss Hatcher said, adding the proposal includes new language to inform parents about devices capable of listening and sending recordings.
Attorney Brown presented policy AGA (recognition of accomplishments) as a five‑year review with no recommended changes. Miss Gore presented policy KJ (advertising in schools) also as a five‑year review with no recommended changes. All three items were set to appear on the board’s deliberation agenda at the next meeting for further consideration.
During public comment, Brenda Marks of Hampton thanked the board for the change to the electronic‑device policy and urged the board not to schedule meetings on the same nights as city council budget hearings. "I'd like to thank you for the change to the electronic device policy... it's better for us to be able to have the assurance that we know our children are in the building," she said.
Ending: Policy JP will return for further board deliberation; the two five‑year reviews (AGA and KJ) will also return to the board at its next meeting.
