Assemblymember Harry Bronson urged statewide participation in an HIV housing initiative, saying only social service districts in New York City have opted into the program so far and that people living in poverty with HIV outside the city are not receiving housing and services they need.
"If they don't have housing, they don't stay on their medication. If you don't stay on your medication with HIV, you die. You die," Bronson said, emphasizing the public‑health importance of housing supports for this population. He urged the budget to include slightly over $3,000,000 for the first year to expand access.
Bronson framed the funding as lifesaving and called on the Legislature to ensure these services are available beyond New York City. The subcommittee did not take a formal vote; members asked negotiators to account for this expansion in final budget decisions.
