Palm Coast City Council approved a resolution renaming the Southern Recreation Center's show court the "Friends of Tennis Court" to recognize the volunteer organization Friends of Tennis and its long-term support for local tennis programs.
Why this matters: The naming recognizes volunteer contribution to the tennis center, including event support, volunteer staffing and scholarships for graduating seniors.
What council heard
Parks & Recreation staff said the show court, unveiled Jan. 13, 2025 as part of phase 2 enhancements funded in part by a $700,000 USTA growth grant, seats about 40 spectators and includes LED lighting for night play. Friends of Tennis volunteers assist with tournaments, run fundraisers, donate equipment and administer scholarships; representatives asked that the new center court carry the group's name.
Public comment and council action
Friends of Tennis president Agnes Lightfoot spoke in support of the renaming and described the group's 18-year role in promoting tennis and supporting youth teams and scholarships. Council voted unanimously in favor of the renaming.
Ending
The council directed staff to move forward with the approved renaming; the item will be implemented with a signage and plaque plan coordinated by Parks & Recreation.
