Up Center construction advances; welding, IT, carpentry and automotive temporarily relocated
Summary
District officials told the Nelson County board the Up Center renovation is at a construction stage that requires vacating instructional spaces; several career and technical programs have been temporarily moved to other schools and community partners.
District staff updated the Nelson County Board of Education on March 18 about progress at the Up Center renovation and temporary relocations for several career and technical education (CTE) programs.
Kelsey Berryman and district administrators said structural work and upcoming concrete pours require vacating parts of the building to allow crews to complete the floor and other elements. District staff reported the following temporary placements: welding and IT programs are housed at Nelson County High School; carpentry is at Thomas Nelson High School; and Bardstown City Schools is hosting the automotive program for the near term. Health science collaboration courses are scheduled to operate at Nelson County High School and the district's media arts program will be at Thomas Nelson when classes restart. Electrical and heavy equipment programs do not yet have a short'term home, and district staff said they are actively searching for safe, compliant locations.
Berryman said construction crews have been cooperative in working around active student programs but that moving sooner would allow the contractor to proceed efficiently: "They're working around us... but it's better that we get out of their hair sooner rather than later so that they're able to continue to move forward and be successful," she said.
Board members pressed for clarity on where programs will be housed and noted legal and liability limits when using community partner facilities. Staff said they had explored community placements last summer but some potential partners declined after consulting with legal counsel. The board was told the local planning committee (LPC) convenes the following day to continue facility-planning work and that LPC meetings will be live streamed and open to the public.
Why it matters: The Up Center is a major district facility project tied to career-technical education. Temporary relocations affect students, schedules and logistics; the district said it is seeking short'term solutions to maintain programs while construction continues.
