Surprise commissioners praise local business partners and consider mobile book trailer

McCarthy described partner contributions ranging from ice-cream scoops and breakfast sandwiches to donated books used in library sales and distribution to local schools.
Members discussed options for a mobile library presence. One commissioner suggested a trailer outfitted with shelves as a lower-cost alternative to a full bookmobile. Commissioners noted that other city departments already use trailers for neighborhood services and said legal and operational questions remain, including whether a trailer used as a patron space would face different regulations than existing vehicles.
Commissioners asked staff to research legal requirements, permitting and interdepartmental precedents. McCarthy said she would consult with city legal staff and other departments and return with guidance.
Why it matters: a mobile presence would extend library services to neighborhoods and partner sites but requires clarity on legal and safety standards, staffing and equipment. Commissioners saw value in trying lower-cost pilot options but requested staff to confirm rules before moving forward.
