Lee County commissioners unanimously direct staff to send letter supporting law-enforcement ICE training

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners on March 18 directed staff to prepare a letter to the Lee County Sheriff and the Port Authority Police Chief expressing Board support for law-enforcement training to coordinate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The motion was introduced after one commissioner described recent council actions in nearby municipalities that he said declined to support police participation in ICE training. He asked staff to draft a letter, signed by the Board chair, that would state the county's support for its officers receiving training on how to interact with ICE in encounters that occur during routine law enforcement work.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the request. A commissioner characterized the action as limited to supporting training and education for officers, not a policy change in enforcement. "We're gonna support our law enforcement here in Lee County," the commissioner said on the record.
Next steps: staff will prepare the letter for the chair's signature and deliver it to Sheriff Marceno and the Port Authority Police Chief as requested by the Board.
