Keystone Central SD reviews fall and winter sports participation; several teams advanced to district or state events

Presenters reported participation declines in some programs and growth in others. Varsity football participation declined from 23 players to 18, and the varsity football record fell from 5–4 last season to 0–8 this season, presenters said. Junior high football participation remained at 21 players; junior high records were reported as 6–0 last year and 5–1 this year. Junior high softball gained one player (9 to 10). Varsity tennis grew from nine to 10 players and qualified for districts.
The marching band returned with 11 members. Varsity cheer membership changed from eight to seven and junior high cheer from nine to six. Presenters said boys basketball had 15 players and finished 12–12 and qualified for the state tournament but lost in the first round; the girls basketball team had eight players, recorded five wins and qualified for districts.
The swimming program saw participation rise from 15 to 22 athletes this season. Presenters said the boys swim team was 14–1 and the girls 13–2; one swimmer, Cameron Baer, attended the IAA swimming championships and placed 14th in two events and is headed to West Virginia University.
Wrestling was highlighted as a strong program: the team was undefeated in regular-season meets, won the District 6 AAA team championship, and advanced to the PIAA state tournament. Presenters said seven wrestlers moved from districts to regionals and then to states; Dalton Perry finished second and plans to attend Penn State University. Two girls advanced from districts to regionals and two reached the state tournament, where one placed third.
Presenters noted that Coach Baer may step away from the swimming program to follow his daughter’s collegiate career and that the district will likely need a replacement coach. Bocce finished 5–2 and placed second at the PEAC end-of-year bocce tournament.
