Columbia County schedules March 21 job fair; seeks workers for water, public safety, IT and maintenance

Columbia County will host a job fair on March 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Athens, Jeff Carney, director of human resources for Columbia County, said.
The event is intended to recruit for a range of county departments and roles. “So here at Water Utility, we have tons of open positions,” a Water Utility representative said, adding the county has openings in plant operations, distribution and sewer departments. The county also is hiring for patrol deputies, deputy jailers and 9-1-1 communications officers, a law enforcement representative said.
Carney said attending in person gives applicants an advantage because department directors and managers will be present. “Instead of just being an application in our computer system, we get to see you face to face. You get to make a connection with department directors and managers that are here looking to hire,” Carney said.
County speakers described many positions as entry-level and emphasized training and career advancement. “Let us pay for your schooling, and you get paid while you're going to school to become a patrol deputy,” a law enforcement representative said. A County IT representative said the county regularly has tech openings and work supporting broadband and network operations. A Public Works representative noted the county employs roughly 44 people who cut grass and is looking to add more maintenance staff.
Speakers highlighted benefits and internal advancement. “Working for the county is a great opportunity. Not only do they have good health benefits and other great benefits as well, we like to invest in our employees. We help you move up in your ladder of success to make sure that you are valued in life,” a staff member said.
The county advised applicants to bring a resume, to dress professionally and to bring questions and enthusiasm. Carney closed by providing an alternative for those unable to attend in person: “If you can't come in person, you can go to our county website, and click on the jobs tab and there's a link to take you to every open vacancy that we have.”
