Commissioners approve purchase of new wheel loader; financing to be conventional loan

Jones County commissioners voted March 18 to purchase a replacement wheel loader through the Sourcewell cooperative and to finance the machine with a conventional loan that lets the county own the equipment outright.
Public-works staff explained the county budget previously approved a wheel (front-end) loader; staff sought approval to accept a Sourcewell quote and select financing. The new machine described in the quotes was a larger unit with a roughly 70-horsepower engine to allow the county to operate the asphalt zipper and to reduce wear on other equipment. Staff said the existing 1994 machine had roughly 10,500 hours and is nearing the end of its useful life.
The county compared financing options, including a five-year balloon with guaranteed buyback and a conventional loan. Staff recommended the conventional loan as the least costly option over the long term if the county intends to keep the machine. Commissioners agreed and approved purchase and conventional financing (ACCG option) by motion.
The purchase approval covered two actions: first, authority to procure the loader via the cooperative contract (Sourcewell); second, selection of the ACCG conventional loan for financing. Commissioners voted in favor of both motions by voice vote.
Staff noted the quote included a standard warranty and an extended 60-month/5,000-hour warranty option; the purchase motion also covered warranty terms listed in the Sourcewell quote. Commissioners directed staff to determine disposition of the older loader (repair for yard use or surplus sale) and to finalize financing paperwork.
