OPOC to attend SPD training April 18; retreat set for June 26–27

Spokane Police Chief David Hall invited members of the Office of Police Ombudsman Commission to a training at the Spokane Police Academy on April 18, commissioners said March 18. The session is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon and is described as a four-hour "mini citizens academy."
Commissioners discussed how to handle attendance and quorum rules. Legal advice given at the meeting suggested the commission may issue a notice that a quorum might be present but that no official business would be conducted during the training. "There is a training that Chief Hall wants to invite the OPOC to ... April 18," said Bart Loc when announcing the invite.
The commission also confirmed a retreat set for June 26–27, and staff said they plan to book space at the downtown library once the facility's two-month booking window opens. Commissioners said the retreat will include new-commissioner onboarding, facilitated training (the commission suggested involving a NAICOL-affiliated facilitator), and a substantive session on whether and how the commission would expand in the future.
Staff said they will prepare a training packet and examples of onboarding programs from other oversight bodies for commission review before the retreat.
